What do we mean when we talk about equalities and diversity?
On a very basic level equality is about making sure everyone has the same opportunities as everyone else and not unfairly disadvantaged. Equalities is not about giving someone preferential treatment but about ensuring they can compete on the same level as everyone else.
Sounds simple but this can be very complex as we are all individual with different needs and there are those of us who may need a little extra in the workplace. It is not always possible to ‘see’ that someone has those needs and employees and employers should treat all staff with dignity and respect.
